The King Black Dragon is a boss that requires traversing the Wilderness to reach it, but once you reach its cave, you'll be in a safe combat zone. Therefore, it's crucial to take precautions when facing this boss. It is a perfect boss for non-experienced players who want to join the PvM world, as well as for old veteran pros who are in search of a pet or just want to go for fun.

While the lair itself is safe from PvP, the entrance requires crossing a short section of the Wilderness, so always take precautions before entering.

The King Black Dragon Lair is located under the Wilderness Lava Maze, accessible via a lever and cave system.

Although the KBD lair itself is not in the Wilderness, you’ll need to pass through Level 42-45 Wilderness to reach the entrance. Always:

This part is very important and shouldn't be overlooked. There are many malicious players who try every day to trick those who are going to kill the King Black Dragon into equipping skull, so they can then cast Teleblock on them and steal most of their gear. If you ever accidentally get Skull, we've created a more in-depth guide on How Get Rid Of Skull that prevents you from saving your three most expensive items.
How to safely take your gear to the King Black Dragon’s lair
Since you would need to go through the wilderness to get to the King Black Dragon’s lair, it can be pretty risky to take the gear listed below there; however, here are two methods you can use to carry different gear to the lair:
Suicide method
You can only keep three valuable items if you die in the wilderness or four valuable items when the protected item prayer is activated; however, you can follow this trick to carry more items into the King Black Dragon’s lair.
The method works because items that players put into the looting bag will not be kept on death. Therefore, they will be left on the floor if the player dies in the King Black Dragon Lair. However, this poses a risk as
There is a very slight chance that a PKer will cast a teleblock on you when you put your valuable items in your looting bag just before you pull the lever to enter the King Black Dragon lair; this will cause you to lose all the items in the looting bag.
Alt method
Instead of taking the risk involved in the method above, you can use ALT accounts to trade the gear you need when in the King Black Dragon’s lair.
There are several ways to reach the KBD entrance.

Once you reach the gated area, climb down the ladder, then pull the lever to enter the lair.

To be able to fight and successfully kill the King Black Dragon, you need to know his attacks and how to avoid them; these attacks include:
Melee attacks
Four types of Dragonfire:
Standard dragonfire
The King Black Dragon’s dragonfire attacks are stronger than those of other dragons; they can hit up to 65 if the anti-dragon shield, Dragonfire shield, or anti-fire potion is not used. Using an anti-fire potion and any of those shields provides 100% protection against these attacks.
Poison breath
Poison attack will poison players and can be easily overcome by using an anti-poison like antidote++(4).
Shock breath (drains stats)
Shock attack is a shocking breath that drains two levels off all of the player’s stats; players should use stat-restoring potions like super restore(4) to nullify the effects of this attack.
Icy breath (freezes for 6 seconds)
Freeze attack is an icy breath that freezes the player for 6 seconds or 10 ticks.

These attacks can deal up to 50 damage without any prayer, antifire potion, or any of the Dragonfire shields; if protect from magic is used, this will provide some protection as the maximum damage will only be 20. The recommended way players can defend themselves against these attacks is by using both the antifire potion and any of the Dragonfire shields; the player will take only a maximum of 10 damage when using them; using protect from magic with these would not add any more protection.
KBD’s attack patterns are simple and repetitive, making him a very safe boss once you understand the mechanics.
Walk-under method
The King Black Dragon has a relatively fast attack. To slow this down, players can walk under him immediately after performing an attack and then step out to perform another attack. If this method is done correctly, you can slow down the King Black Dragon’s attack to the point where he will perform only one attack for every attack you do. Players should only use this method if their weapon is significantly slower than the King Black Dragon’s attack.

The King Black Dragon may be RuneScape’s oldest boss, but it remains one of the most accessible and nostalgic. It’s a fantastic mid-level money-maker, a solid pet grind, and an excellent warm-up for tougher NPCs like Vorkath or Zulrah, and it's in a multi-zone where you can farm this boss with friends or alt accounts to maximize the speed of your kills.
With proper gear, antifire protection, and a bit of caution in the Wilderness, the KBD becomes an easy, profitable, and satisfying boss to farm — whether for GP, nostalgia, or the thrill of seeing those three dragon heads fall. Gear up with your best anti-dragon protection, choose your preferred location, and farm them efficiently to maximize profit and your KC per hour.
